Can you imagine GOD literally presenting or handing over a song like "Tonga" --- which is considered by many Ghanaians to be one of the most produced lewd/profane songs in the history of Ghana music --- as a gift to HIS one and only son, Joey B, to become a hit?
Well, the reigning "Discovery (New) artiste of the year" of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, Joey B, has stated that his hit song, Tonga, was a gift God gave him.
Joey B, known in private life as Darryl (Paa Kwesi) Bannerman-Martin, made this admission in a chitchat with Archipalago, the video killer, when he was billed to perform on a show in Kumasi.
"As for Tonga, it was God who gave me that song. Upon all the hullabaloos, cacophonous noise and the loads of criticisms generated around my Tonga song, it was given to me as a gift by God," said an elated Joey B when he was asked for his secret to the success of his ever popular Tonga song.
JoeyB also talked briefly about the success story of the Skillions --- a rap group he was a member of --- which comprised the likes of EL, Jayso, Bra Kevin, Lil Shaker before launching their respective successful solo careers.
"Even our coming together to form the group, Skillions, was by the making of God, as apart from Shaker with whom I attended the same school, the rest of us were not personally known to each other," said Joey B.
Tonga, which became one of the much talked about and perhaps, the most heavily criticized song in the history of Ghana's music industry for its sexually suggestive lyrics or lewdness won for him, the new artist of the year, 2014, at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards which came with a car prize tag donated by the Musicians Union of Ghana as part of their contribution to the development of music in Ghana.
He finally gave thumbs up to his die-hard fans in Kumasi and thanked them all for their unflinching support all this while and also, for having seen him through thick and thin up to this level.
He made special mention of Kumasi-based actor Kwaku Manu who he (Joey B) credits for creating the term 'Tonga'.
Joey B also has up his sleeves well known songs like strawberry ginger, Cigarette and a couple of others.
