Chelsea make £75m Aguero swoop, Atletico Madrid want Alexis to replace Griezmann...
If there’s anything that could make this year’s title race more boring and one-sided than it already is, it’s if Chelsea had Sergio Aguero up front as well.
Oh dear.
Anyone hoping for a slightly more competitive league next season will be alarmed to read that the Blues, currently nine points clear at the top of the table, could be bolstering their ranks with the addition of Manchester City’s long-time talisman.
The Sunday People says Chelsea are planning to “hijack” Real Madrid’s £75m summer swoop for the Argentine striker, whose Etihad future is in doubt after Pep Guardiola benched him in favour of teenager Gabriel Jesus.
With Diego Costa still expected to ditch the Blues in order to get rich(er) in China, Aguero would be an ideal like-for-like – and slightly better-looking – replacement.
The Sunday Express says Chelsea could face further competition for the City forward from Inter Milan, who are reportedly offering him a “lucrative escape route” from Manchester.
The Italian giants and now owned by some rich Chinese guys who want to make a “statement signing” by paying Aguero “as much as £300,000 a week”. He could make more than that if he just went to actual China though, to be fair.
Every time Arsenal lose, stories about Alexis Sanchez leaving the Emirates get a little bit scarier for Gunners fans. Therefore, following two successive defeats, the Sunday Mirror’s claim that Atletico Madrid have targeted the Chilean as a replacement for Antoine Griezmann is about as scary as it gets. The La Liga side are reportedly willing to use £60m of the £90m they receive for Griezmann to buy Sanchez.
Manchester United’s seemingly endless pursuit of Benfica defender Victor Lindelof is set to get even more drawn-out after the Portuguese side pulled a fast one by removing a minimum release clause in the Swede’s contract, says the Sunday Express. That basically means United, who could have signed Lindelof for £34.5m in January, may have to fork out £50m if they want to get him in the summer.
Meanwhile, Anthony Martial thinks Jose Mourinho is trying to “push him out” of Old Trafford and feels he has been made a “scapegoat” for all the bad things have happened to United this season, claims the Sunday Mirror. Paris Saint-Germain might be interested in taking the forward back to France and United would be “unlikely to stand in their way”.
Elsewhere, United, Chelsea and Arsenal have been told to pay £40m if they want to sign 21-year-old Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio (Daily Star Sunday), Bayer Leverkusen’s Turkish midfielder Hakan Calhanolglu is close to agreeing a move to Chelsea (Turkish Football) and Arsenal’s board have responded to those aforementioned two successive defeats by offering Arsene Wenger a new two-year contract (Times). They’re still on course for fourth, see.
